CAMPAIGNS
OUSA runs several campaigns in order to represent students’ best interests.
STOP CAMPAIGN
Stop campaign is an OUSA-run campaign designed to help students carefully consider their options before they sign up for overpriced flats. When students sign up early for flats they get ripped off by high rents, and it drives the prices up for everyone else. The STOP campaign starts in late-May each year, and encourages students to wait before they sign up for an overpriced or substandard flat.
THURSDAYS IN BLACK is an ongoing campaign run by the national body, NZUSA, and shows opposition to violence and discrimination in our community. OUSA sells Thursdays In Black t-shirts and hoodies through reception. All profits from this campaign go to Rape Crisis.
FUTURE CAMPAIGNS
Through 2007 and leading up to the 2008 NZ General Election OUSA will be campaigning for increased access to Student Allowances, in line with national strategy. OUSA believes that all students should have access to income support while studying and that it is unfair that students are the only sector of society who have to borrow money to pay for basics like food and rent. It is also unrealistic that we should be judged according to our parents’ income until we are 25 years old. This campaign is ongoing.
Throughout the year OUSA also runs campaigns around International Fees because it is unfair that International Students have such high and unstable fees. There are already so many issues – such as a strong New Zealand dollar – which disadvantage international students; high, unstable fees should not be another. Watch this space for more information on when International Fee Setting will take place, and join in on OUSA’s campaign for fair fees.
OUSA also opposes increases in domestic student fees. The government has recently announced an increase in funding for Universities, and OUSA will campaign to ensure that it is this government funding, and not increased student fees, that boost University funding for 2008. Fee setting usually happens in November, so keep visiting this page to make sure you’re up to date with OUSA’s campaign plans to oppose fee increases.
