Want the Undie 500 back? Like the liquor-free zones? Buses that come when you want and that you can afford to take on a regular basis? Flats without mould and with front doors that shut - and lock?
Who cares what you want? You'll be gone in a year or three. Dunedin will milk your money from you and pack you off without a thought. You don’t vote, you don’t stick around, you don’t matter.
What would Dunedin be like without us?
For a start, it wouldn’t BE Dunedin, it would be South Dunedin.
(Don’t get us wrong - South Dunedin is great - and the Council should put heaps more resources out there)
The centre of the city would comprise three run down old pubs, some tatty shops that were cool in the '80s, and a mall.
There’d be no Circadian Rhythm, no Metro, no Perc, no Toast, no Copa. The Asian would be where you have to go, not choose to go, for the FNO (flattie night out). The Exponents would be the only touring act. Art would be made by committee. The guts of the place would be gone. Although the Calder Prescott trio will always be there…
So it’s odd that the latest residents’ survey produced by the DCC lists student culture as one of Dunedin’s main ‘weaknesses’. They do it because we don’t vote here.
We can’t all bugger off for a year so they can see what value we really bring to Dunedin. So we’re going to have to make ourselves a voting bloc in these local body elections and get taken seriously (like, SERIOUSLY).
Tomorrow (Aug 20) is the last day for getting yourself onto the electoral roll as a Dunedin resident. Go sign yourself up – it’ll only take a minute. Or less!
Student culture is the making of Dunedin. And student money keeps Dunedin afloat.
