OUSA Second Semester Poetry Comp.

Thanks to all those who entered in this semesters poetry competition. The competition attracted more people than expected and the quality of work was outstanding. Congratulations to Rhys Livingsonte (with his poem Symphony), Charlotte Bremer (with Cold War) and Greg Faxon (with How to be Smooth) for winning first, second and third place respectively. Also well done to the highly recommended poets of Oliver Hailes, Haldis Anderson, Mika Mintz and Madison Hamill.

First Place Poem (Symphony) written by Rhys Livingstone

交響樂 (symphony)

This is the things I have done,

and where I have

Where, and for who, and for how long.

I have lent my heart to wild creatures,

even though,

long before I was born,

Truman Capote had already burst millions of people

on the perils of that very same subject.

This is for saying that I’m not sorry,

and this is for saying that I won’t be angry too long, but

just long enough.

This is for saying things loudly when they are meant to be kept silent,

and this is for keeping things silent when they ought to be shouted.

This is for scenes of long past days,

and this is for acts and stages yet to be set.

This is for curtain calls,

and this is for understudies who have entire lives rehearsed,

but never get called upon to perform them.

This is for having exactly the right number of chances,

and this is for making one decision at the expense of another.

This is for seagulls who fight over my chips on the harbour,

while I devise clever puns about letting chips fall where they may.

This is for convenient promises that accumulate themselves,

slowly but surely,

and this is for convenient responses to convenient promises.

This is for Thomas Walls;

no cities, no doors, no places.

This is for the man that said things are beautiful if you love them,

and this is for Cheri,

who said that we spent a whole lifetime searching for what we always already

knew.

This is the shame of having your back to the wall.

This is people you’ve never seen,

being a shadow of loving what everyone else hates.

Of loving, but then, not loving anymore.

This is when something worth fighting for

is the mother of living as though you’ll never die,

and being the son of grieving for it now.

Second Place Poem (Cold War) Written by Charlotte Bremer

Beautiful in the sun's dark slithers,
Usually hidden away,
A gleam within your eye jumped out as if to grab me,
But I caught it before it could.
We sat at opposite ends of the table
Staring at each other
In our own secret cold war.

I ripped out your hair
sucker punched you in the stomach (sucker)
drew blood from your cheek,
with my stares (not my nails).

You blinked, So did i win?

You turned to look down towards your hand,
And in your grasp,
Bright and dark and rich and vibrant red,
I see my own heart beating in your palm.
No, guess I didn't.

Third Place Poem (How to be Smooth) Written by Greg Faxon

Embarrassment is always tethered. It is a twisted phone cord in a wireless world. It is the glue that sticks to my fingers. It is what binds us. I am naturally clumsy. When I slip and fall, the first thing I do is look around. For you. Because I know shame is born from caring. At twelve years old I ripped a hole in the crotch of my pants. Twice. The first time, I was alone and I don’t remember what happened next. The second time, I was at school. I am still blushing. I am sitting across from her and my hands are shaking. It’s the thoughts in my head. They feel like bats. They have made dating very difficult and sitting across from her now I cannot promise I won’t spill my drink on that white dress.
