Queer*
is a reclaimed word arising from the student movement that is used to refer to same sex attraction and gender diversity. It is inclusive but not exclusive to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, takataapui (Maori and Queer), fa’afa-fine and intersex people. It is acknowledged that queer is not the preferred term for everybody.

Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans, Queer… Dunno, Maybe?
Finding out and coming to terms with being queer* can be a challenging time for some people. OUSA recognises this and provides confidential, discrete and non judgmental support and information for queer and questioning students at Uni and Polytech.

Want to chat with someone confidentially about sexuality, gender identity or any issues that might have come up?
Peer Support Is completely confidential and discreet. Our team of trained peer supporters are from different cross sections of the community, so you get to chose who you talk to. They have all experienced coming to terms, questioning, wondering, being scared. They are there to listen and support you through these issues as well any other issues that may come up if you are non questioning. They can meet with you on or off campus, café/private, wherever suits you! For more info, or to meet with a peer supporter contact Queer Support.

Having any Queer related problems at University?
If you experienced anything that you felt was homo/transphobic Queer Support can support you, provide information and potentially alleviate the problem.

Want to find a selection of Queer DVDs and books?
The Queer Support multimedia library has over 40 queer DVDs (Lword/Queer as Folk box sets, But I’m a cheerleader, Brokeback Mountain, Queer Duck to name but a few!), Videos and 100 Books and Comics free to hire. It’s all kept in the OUSA Student Support Centre, so come and check them out!
