Questioning?
Finding out about and coming to terms with gender and sexual identity is sometimes a challenging and confusing experience. It can be daunting to be confronted with labels such as gay, lesbian, bi, trans, 'queer'.
OUSA recognises that sexual orientation and gender identity are not fixed but are parts of what makes us the unique individuals that we are at any given time. Student Support offers non-judgmental support, information and resources for Uni and Polytech students who are questioning sexuality and gender identity.
Need to talk to someone?
Would you like a totally confidential, safe space to talk through any feelings or issues about gender and sexual identity that you might be experiencing? Our wonderful student peer supporters come from diverse backgrounds so you get to choose someone you are comfortable with talking to. Each of them has experience in questioning, coming to terms, wondering and, sometimes, being nervous or scared. They can meet with you on or off campus, at a cafe or somewhere private that suits you! For more information, please contact the Queer Support Coordinator at or 021 4 QINFO.
Having any queer-related problems at University?
If you have experienced any homophobic or transphobic behaviour that has made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, Queer Support can help. We can provide information, advocacy and support to potentially alleviate the problem.
'Queer' is a term used to describe the many variations of sexual attraction and sex/gender identity, including intersex, transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, asexual, fa'afafine, takatapui, lesbian, bisexual and gay. Although it may not be the preferred term for everyone, it is used to challenge binary representations of sexuality, sex, and gender.
