OVERVIEW

Nau mai, tāuti mai! If you're interested in learning more about te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) in a non-confrontational environment, this Māori language and culture course is for you.


BEGINNERS

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU NEED

No previous experience is needed, just a willingness to learn.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Explore the basics of te reo Māori (Māori language), culture (including waiata, karakia and tikanga marae), pre-colonial history and key cultural concepts. Develop your pepeha (personal introduction) and built your confidence to kōrero (speak). Karawhiua! - Go for it!

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU NEED

Students will need to have completed our beginners course OR have some knowledge of the language. Contact our Recreation Programme Coordinator if you are unsure on sarahtaylor@ousa.org.nz.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Expand your knowledge of the basics of te reo Māori, including conversational language, whakataukī and kīwaha. Learn more about te ao Māori (a Māori world view): explore some local history, including the early European contact period, impacts of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and land sales, and contemporary mahinga kai practices.
