This is your chance to do a 5-week introductory course to learn the traditional skills of Maori flax weaving. You will make a wide range of finished products including simple whariki (mats) putiputi (flowers) and kete (baskets – two and four corner). Your Kaiako raranga (weaving tutor) is Anita Mitchell, who brings years of experience to this most traditional of skills. .
Flax weaving traditionally had many uses, not least as a way of passing on culture, through the patterns in woven articles, as well as the stories told and beliefs affirmed.
As modern materials eventually replaced many of the original uses of flax, the art of weaving has very much entered the realm of the arts, ensuring the survival of this ancient skill
If you have some previous experience of flax weaving then this is still for you, as your tutor will guide you through the process of creating more complex pieces.
