Japanese Sword

WHAT ITS ABOUT

During this course, you will be introduced to the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu style of Japanese Sword Fighting, a traditional style of Kenjutsu and Iaijutsu. The modern martial art of Kendo is based on this and similar traditional styles. Practice involves working through a series of forms (kata)- both solo and with a partner- using wooden swords and, at an advanced level, live blades. Students can expect to learn correct cutting technique, the core principle of the style, and a selection of introductory kata.

This is a course for beginners.

REQUIREMENTS

No requirements, you will be run through some basic health and safety on your arrival.

A LITTLE ON THE FACILITATOR

Seishinkan was started by Phil Davison Sensei at Auckland University in 1993 after returning from studying Martial Arts such as Hapkido, Jujutsu, Iajutsu (Muso Jikiden Eishen Ryu), and White Crane Kung Fu overseas for 13 years.

In the year 2000 Phil Sensei moved to Dunedin and started a branch of Seishinkan. Shortly after an OUSA branch of Seishinkan was started. In the early days it focused more on the Muso Jikiden Eishen Ryu Sword style of Seishinkan. In 2011 Phil Sensei asked Craig Pollock to take over as Head Instructor for the OUSA branch, and Craig has been doing this ever since.

There are four main Martial Arts practiced by Seishinkan. They are Aiki Jujutsu, Musi Jikiden Eishen Ryu Iajutsu, Ryoen Ryu Naginatajutsu, and Bojutsu.
