Letterpress Printing at Ōtākou Press Studio

Letterpress Printing at Ōtākou Press Studio

Step back into the world of traditional printing with this hands-on letterpress workshop at the historic Ōtākou Press Studio. You’ll learn the basics of old-school metal and wood type, explore vintage hand-powered presses, and work together to create your own printed pieces.

Across the session, you’ll:

• Get an introduction to Ōtākou Press Studio and its heritage equipment

• Learn how metal type, wood type, and classic printing tools work

• Work as a group to design and print a single-colour postcard

• Print a pre-designed wood-type poster in two colours to take home

No experience needed — just curiosity and a love for ink, paper, and making things the old-fashioned way!

*The studio space is small and not well setup for mobility access. The studio holds heavy, vintage hand-powered technology which needs careful treatment. We use lead-based type, oil-based inks, and cleaning solvents. You are required to wear closed toe shoes in the studio.
