Flax Weaving

Flax Weaving

This is your chance to do a 5-week introductory course to learn the traditional skills of Maori flax weaving. You will make a wide range of finished products including simple mats, konae (2 cornered basket), rourou (4 cornered basket) and putiputi (flowers). Your Kaumātua is Maera White, who brings years of experience to this most traditional of skills. Flax weaving traditionally had many uses, not least as a way of passing on culture. Through the patterns in woven articles, stories were told and beliefs affirmed. As modern materials eventually replaced many of the original uses of flax, the art of weaving has very much entered the realm of the arts, ensuring the survival of this ancient skill.
