Yoga Teacher Training Programme

200 hour & 300 hour level certificates

Train to become a yoga teacher under the tutelage of renowned yoga teacher, Wayne Everson. This Yoga Teacher Training Programme offers 200-Hour and 300-Hour courses designed around a rigorous ongoing yoga practice programme at OUSA. Over the course of the programme you will also complete 20 theory based sessions (10 per semester). Whether you wish to become a yoga teacher or to just deepen your practice and understanding of yoga, this programme presents a unique and amazing opportunity.


 

Please Note: The first Theory Session is a free introductory talk open to all, providing an opportunity for students to investigate the scope and breadth of the course. You do not have to be registered for the course to attend this session.


Outline of Programme:

The programme will cover a minimum of 200 hours. This includes body practice accompanied by a series of theory-based sessions designed to deepen and enhance your yoga knowledge and experience, as well as a meditation component.

Although this is a rigorous training programme, the study options for these courses designed to be flexible for students. This programme is open to all. You can complete the programme while you attend yoga classes at OUSA during your time at University. You can also enrol as a non-student. The certificates are designed to be completed over eighteen months to three years depending on which course you choose (200 or 300 hours). Upon completion of all theory components and requirements, in addition to yoga practice hours, a Yoga Teaching Certificate will be awarded. There is an expectation that you will teach/ lead some classes prior to the awarding of the certificate.

 

Your training will cover amongst others, correct alignment and safe yoga practice, the art of yoga teaching, cautions and ethics of teaching and practice, anatomy, health, an introduction to Sanskrit and yoga terminology, the philosophy and history of yoga, the three gunas, meditation, pranayama, introduction to key yoga texts, the Eight Limbs of Yoga (Classical Yoga), the principal branches of yoga, and yoga in the contemporary world.

 

The aim of this programme is to develop high quality Yoga Teachers who are accomplished practitioners, equipped with a depth and breadth of experience and knowledge in this complex subject.


Pre-requisites:

Body Yoga: There is no prerequisite for beginning the physical training for this course (excluding serious health issues).

 

Theory: The theory prerequisite for the 200-hr programme is at least one year of serious yoga practice either here at OUSA or through another recognised yoga tradition. The prerequisite for the 300-hr course is the successful completion of the 200-hr certificate.

 

Meditation: You will be expected to also take at least two OUSA meditation courses during your training period. These traditionally take place Thursdays 4.45-5.45pm (5 sessions per Semester).

 

Enrollment: All students are required to attend a brief informal pre-enrollment interview with the teacher. This will give student and teacher an opportunity to meet and discuss requirement details.

 


Dates:

 

Yoga practice:

Your practice hours will accrue through your attendance at the regular yoga sessions at OUSA throughout the year. During Semester these are:

  • Monday & Thursday evenings (6-8 pm) and
  • Wednesday and Friday Lunchtimes (12-1pm). 

These sessions commence on Monday 19th February, 2018.

You should attend as many of these sessions as you are able to throughout the year in order to attain your  practical requirements for the course.  (Times/ days of week may change outside of Semester).

 

Theory Component 200-hr:

Yoga theory will be taught 6.00pm 7.30pm on Friday evenings, with 10 sessions taking place each Semester. 

Theory Dates for 2018:

Semester One:        Starts 9th March ends 25th May         (Nb. no classes 30-03 & 06-04)

Semester Two:        Starts 20th July ends 28th September

Please Note: You will need to sign up for the theory component at the beginning of Semester One. If you miss this deadline, then you will be able to proceed with accruing hours in the body yoga sessions, but you will have to wait for the following year to complete your theory component. If this is the case, please be sure to inform the teacher that you intend to complete the programme and that you wish your yoga practice hours to be logged and counted towards your certification.

 

Meditation practice:

Your practice hours will also accrue through your attendance at the twice-yearly Meditation course at OUSA. 

Semester One:   Thursday evenings (4.45-5.45 pm) 26th April to 24th May, 2018.

Semester Two:   Time & date still TBC, though likely to be Thursday evenings (4.45-5.45 pm) 6th September to 4th October, 2018.


Venue:

All sessions, both practical and theory, take place at the OUSA Clubs & Socs Building, 84 Albany Street, Dunedin.


Costs:

Yoga Practice:

Students: For students enrolled in the teacher training programme -  $40 for 10 sessions ($4.00 per session)

Non-Students: For non-students enrolled in the teacher training programme $60 for 10 sessions ($6.00 per session)

 

Theory Component 200-hr:

Students: $400 for 20 sessions

Non-Students: $750 for 20 sessions

Please Note: You will need to sign up for the theory component at the beginning of Semester One.

We will need to sight your Student ID at the beginning of the theory block course if you select the Student Price.

 

Total Cost:

The total cost of the programme will comprise of:

  • the fixed cost of the theory component
  • plus the cost of a minimum of 2 mediation courses (currently $35 per course)
  • in addition to the cost the practical yoga sessions*

 

*The cost of the practical/ body yoga sessions required to attain your required number of hours is somewhat dependent on your preferred choice of payment (i.e individual sessions, or pre-paid 10 for the price of 8 card), but also on whether you attend lunchtime (1 hour) or evening (2 hours) yoga sessions (both are priced individually at $5 for a session student or $7.50 a session for non-student).

There will be an additional cost for the 300-hr certificate.

Please note that for the purposes of this course:

  • Student includes Otago University, Otago Polytech, and Otago Language Students only.
  • Non-student includes all others, including OU/OP staff and Alumni.

Your Tutor & School of Yoga

Wayne Everson is a renowned teacher of classical hatha-yoga. He began practising yoga at the age of 14 and has taught yoga continuously for over forty years in New Zealand and overseas.

He teaches in the style of the Internationally acclaimed Iyengar tradition. His main teacher was Martyn Jackson a major student of the revered B.K.S. Iyengar. Wayne has studied hatha-yoga, raja-yoga and meditation with numerous internationally distinguished teachers of yoga and Buddhism. He is a recipient of the Dhammachai Prize for Sanskrit. In the 1980s the legendary teacher Nicky Knoff asked him to take over her classes at that time.


Certification

Upon completion of all theory components and requirements in addition to yoga practice hours, a Yoga Teaching Certificate  will be awarded. The teaching certificate will detail the level of attainment, the areas of study and the issuing authority. In addition to the certificate, a detailed course transcript will also be issued to the student. In this programme the 200 hour level and 300 hour level certificates indicate the actual number of hours of student study (which includes both the theory and practical practice hours completed over the duration of the programme).


Accreditation

This yoga teacher training course, the first of its kind in New Zealand, offers a high quality certification (not 'accreditation') for yoga teachers and practitioners. The topic of certification, as opposed to accreditation, will be discussed in the introductory Theory session.
