Otago Society of Arts and Philosophy

Otago Society of Arts and Philosophy

Philosophy and the arts are deeply entangled with all aspects of human endeavor. They are our ways of understanding the world and our place within it; our way of appreciating the beauty of life, and our way of finding meaning within suffering. They are the foundations of our society, or, as some allege, the toxin that corrodes that foundation. We seek to take philosophy and the arts down from their inaccessible ivory towers, and to put them in dialogue with lived experience.

We provide an open and accessible forum for discussion, film viewings, book clubs, and other arts-related events. Otago Society of Arts and Philosophy is for anyone interested in the intertwining of art, philosophy, and real life. You do not need to be a philosophy student (or even an arts student!) in order to join and participate fully in this society. All you need is an open mind. Our society has incredible support from the university's philosophy department, and an approachable and highly motivated executive composed of students from a diverse range of disciplines. Despite their disparate studies, they all share a passion for learning and discussion, and, most importantly, for the arts, in all the forms that they take. We hope you join us for candid discussions and fun events, all centered around the big questions of life.
