Effective Altruism Dunedin

Effective Altruism Dunedin

Want to make the world a better place? At EA Dunedin, we use evidence and careful reasoning to figure out how to do that. We host meetups with visiting speakers, discussion groups, and career planning courses to find the best ways of doing good in the world. If this interests you, you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Our execs (2023)

President Merlin Herrick

Merlin is studying computational modelling and PPE. He’s interested in pursuing a career that will help positively shape the development of advanced AI, either through technical development or policy, or both. He’s also interested in building the EA community which is why he started the club. His other interests include philosophy, health/longevity, and meditation.

Vice President and Treasurer Daniel Guppy

Daniel is studying his PhD in philosophy, and is particularly interested in the various impacts of AI on society. Daniel got involved in effective altruism in 2017, and enjoys the community of like-minded people who want to challenge themselves and make a real difference in the world. He plays guitar, listens to a lot of music, and really enjoys the heavy metal and hardcore punk music scenes.

Secretary Oli Smith

Oli is studying a BA in politics and economics, with a particular interest in international relations and US foreign policy. Oli became involved in EA at the beginning of 2022 and has since enjoyed being a part of a community where his political knowledge can be practically applied to making the world a better place. He loves the outdoors, playing guitar and listening to heavy metal and grunge music.

Communications Officer Isaiah Holman

Isaiah is working for the University of Otago as an administrator, with an interest in developing efficient systems that improve people's lives, and using creative media to make an impact. Isaiah became interested in EA last year, and has found the community to provide valuable support and opportunities in following a career helping others. Outside of work he enjoys learning about space, photography, and tramping.

Social and Wellbeing Officer Darcy Herrick

Darcy is studying neuroscience and philosophy. She is interested in animal sentience and consciousness within an EA framework. Darcy’s hobbies include songwriting and tramping.
