MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING HELD IN THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE BULL-PEN ON TUESDAY 16 APRIL 2024 AT 3.30PM

 

PRESENT

Keegan Wells (Chair), Emily Williams, Stella Lynch, Liam White, Ibuki Nishada, Stella McCurdy, Telekalafi (Tele) Likiliki, Emma Jackson, Tara Shepherd, Hanna Friedlander and Gemella Reynolds-Hatem.

TUAKIRITAKA – UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO

            Our guests were welcomed to the meeting.

For the first time in 154 years the University of Otago is significantly changing its visual identity. They are adopting a new tohu (symbol) created in collaboration with mana whenua changing its Māori name to Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, the University of Otago will remain.

Hone Paul addressed the meeting and showed a video showing the pride in the identity and explaining the meaning of the new name and the importance of the symbol emphasising the importance of relationships.  A name that is unique to us and celebrate our special place in the world. A place of many firsts!

There has been consultation with alumni.

Rebecca arrived at 3.41pm

The large sign on the Cumberland Street entrance will be unveiled at 7am on 1 May 2024 and the executive are invited to attend.

Gemella arrived at 3.52pm  

Hone said the Coat of Arms will be retained for communication, ceremonial livery, and graduation certificates for now.  He said most signage around the university campus will remain the same except for the 3 large signs that are on a planned replacement cycle.       

Hone Paul and Jacinta Ruru (deputy vice-chancellor Māori) are travelling to the NAFSA: Association of International Educators conference and Expo in New Orleans next month to promote the changes to the university brand.

Hone and Bethany were thanked for their presentation and attending the meeting.

OUSA UPDATES

            No updates as Debbie on leave.

TE RŌPŪ MĀORI UPDATE

            Gemella met with other Tumuaki while in Wellington.

The Te Rōpū Māori Co-Tumuaki has been appointed which has been a great relief to the workload.

The SGM went well and Keegan was thanked for chairing the meeting.

A training event will be held this coming weekend.

A fundraiser for Palestine being organised.

Planning for the ANZAC Day kapa haka and reading.

UNIVERSITY OTAGO PACIFIC ISLAND STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION UPDATE

            Overall going great.

            Study night and quiz night being organised.

            Two positions to fill.

CAPPING CHARITY 2024

            The chair asked for nominations and a straw poll was held.

            Riding for Disabled Dunedin

            Dunedin Pride

            Any Humanitarian aid

            Red Cross Dunedin

            Ronald McDonald Christchurch.

135/24 THAT Dunedin Riding for the Disabled be the Capping Charity for 2024.

Dunedin Riding for the Disabled is one of the recipients for the volunteering day on 3 May 2024 – Good Mahi.

AFFILIATION - IYSSE

A revised constitution was submitted with emphasise that education was the primary intent. Further correspondence with the club was held with OUSA and it was decided to affiliate them.

Emily has submitted the policy and requests the executive review their positions and send any amendments to her.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE ACADEMIC COMMITTEE

            Moved from the Chair

137/24 THAT Anahera Whaanga-Smith, Irfaan Ariffin, Telekalafi Likiliki, Leah Mitchell, Oscar Stone, Rohil Prasad and Brodee Thomson be appointed to the Academic Committee for 2024.

COMMON SEAL – MOU OUSA/UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO VICE CHANCELLOR

138/24 THAT the Common Seal be affixed to the memorandum of understanding between the Otago University Students’ Association and the University of Otago Vice Chancellor.

SUBMISSION – FAST TRACK BILL

Liam explained his intentions of submitting on the Fast Track Bill and will pass it around the executive via email for approval before sending it.  There is a deadline as it is due Friday. A copy will be submitted to the next executive meeting.

139/24 THAT OUSA agree to the submission on the Fast Track Bill that has been explained and circulated this week.

GENERAL BUSINESS

A Housing Bill is being proposed by the government and Liam will write a submission and bring it to exec.

Hyde Street wrist banding – the reception staff would really appreciate executive helping with this tomorrow from 6pm please.  A good chance to liaise with our members.

ANZAC Day – please remember to be available from 12.30pm on 25 April to stand with banners and help with set up outside the staff club.

The Brand unveiling – all welcome, 1 May 2024 at 7am on Cumberland Street.

Lecture recordings – work in progress.
