There was a light fitting in the corridor upstairs that was sparking and has now been fixed.

  BIRD OF THE YEAR

President elect thought it was important we continue with this as last year it brought much debate and hilarity along with the importance of the Forest and Bird’s Bird of the year recognises our unique birds and with each vote we give them a voice.

Each member of the executive were asked to nominate a bird and give their reason.  It was enlightening and generous that the 3 attendees at the meeting were invited to express their desired bird of the year as well.

Birds chosen were – Dotterel (Pohowera), Yellow-eyed penquin (Hoiho), Blue Duck (Whio), Royal Spoonbill (Kotuku Ngutupapa), New Zealand Falcon (Kārearea).

CLEAN UP SQUAD

Nathan Laurie was invited to address the meeting. He would like to suggest OUSA and OPSA work together to have more regular Street Clean-ups as the one in honour of Sophia Crestani was such a success. He suggested perhaps the last Sunday of each month could be a way of choosing a date and maybe extend the areas.

There was some agreement but also concern that lots of the rubbish collected last weekend was from years of accumulated rubbish in back yards.  The tenants and landlords should be doing this. The cost of extra skips and gear isn’t cheap and the coordination and management requires a lot of work.  The idea has been flowed so let’s visit it again at a later date.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Marine Science proposed staff cuts – the petition has 810 physical signatures, more helped needed to distribute please.  William has drafted a submission and will circulate it later.  There is a rally on Friday at 12.30pm at the Mellor Labs.  All encouraged to attend.

Yoga night – this is planned for 28 October at 8:15pm in the Manaaki Centre.

Queer Space – owing to the original space being taken we are now being offered a space in the building near the concrete archway.  Unfortunately there isn’t any wheelchair access or a non-binary toilet.  James will organise a tour soon.

OUSA reunion – there is a small gathering of about 25 people attending this over Labour Weekend.  The Executive are invited to join in at all events but especially the debate – topic: Dare to be wise!

Next Executive meeting will be Tuesday 29th October owing to Labour Day, time to be finalised soon.

Meeting closed at 10.55am
