MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 11 OCTOBER 2021 AT 11:01AM HELD VIA ZOOM.

 

PRESENT

Michaela Waite-Harvey (Chair), Emily Coyle, Josh Meikle, Michael Evans, Maya Polaschek, Dushanka Govender, Geraldi Ryan, Sophie Barham, Mhairi Mackenzie Everitt, Karamea Pēwhairangi and Melissa Lama.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

            Nothing to report.

            New Covid-19 level guidelines will be announced this afternoon.

OUSA UPDATE

            New Accounts Administrator starts tomorrow

            Beerfest – Event being monitored owing to Covid restrictions. 

            Critic – last issue today. 

            OUSA/TEU Collective employment bargaining - this is taking place this week.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Welcome to the new CDO, Catherine Corry was invited to introduce herself to the meeting and then the executive followed with an introduction.

TE ROOPU MĀORI UPDATE

            Wrapping up this years’ activities

            Māori Ball – this is being held on Friday evening

            Vaccinations – work continuing to get many vaccinated.

            AGM – scheduled for tomorrow

OTAGO UNIVERSITY PACIFIC ISLAND STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION UPDATE

            Working on a data base for incoming PI students returning from Auckland

            TRM/OUPISA vaccination clinics continue

AGM – this was held recently, and Melissa commended the OUSA Executive for their work this year as there were personal mention of the Executive.

Michaela responded thanking the OUPISA for the extended partnership with the Pacific Island students this year.

NZUSA UPDATES

National Council meeting was held via zoom last week.  It went ok.  Congress went well with good discussions, productivity and debates. Some policies being updated for accountability.  Levies were discussed and restructuring the office was discussed.

A motion was passed to connect with Pacific, Australasian and European student associations.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:  PASSING OF ROBERT POMARE

Robert Pomare was Tumuaki for Te Roopu Māori in 2015, an ex-officio officer on the OUSA Executive passed away recently. OUSA wishes to acknowledge all the mahi he did during his term.

384/21 THAT OUSA acknowledges the passing of Rob Pomare and passes on their condolences to whanau and friends.

REFERENDUM RESULTS

            As attached for noting.  1117 votes cast. Some of the constitutional changes passed, one being the definition of International Students studying at the University.

There were no complaints or queries received by the Returning Officer or Secretary, so a written report wouldn’t be required.

            As attached. This has been discussed with staff and policy committee at length.

            After a lively discussion and debate a straw poll was taken, the result as follows.

386/21 THAT the OUSA Executive endorses the South Island Kōkako as the Bird of the Year for 2021.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Bird of the year sadness – Michael Evans wished it to be noted how upset he is that the Takahē wasn’t chosen owing to his vocal expression of devotion of this fine bird by his beloved late grandfather.

Te Roopu Māori 2022 executive elections –

387/21 THAT OUSA wishes to congratulate the newly elected Te Roopu Māori Executive for 2022.

            Submissions – Mhairi wished to note there were 3 submissions coming up that OUSA could submit on if people wished and all depending on her workload.

            1. Human Rights (Disability Assist Dogs Non-Discrimination) Amendment Bill

2. Land Transport (Clean Vehicles) Amendment Bill

3. Te Pire mō te Hararei Tūmatanui o te Kāhui o Matariki/Te Kāhui o Matariki Public Holiday Bill

 Karamea and Melissa offered their assistance.
