Empowerment Self-Defense and Personal Safety for Women
WHAT ITS ABOUT
Gain more confidence to live your best life and deal with whatever comes your way! This course provides a supportive space for all women* to learn and practice simple, evidence-based skills for safety in a range of situations relevant to women’s lives.
You will learn:
- About your rights: to safety and to defend yourself
- How to set boundaries using positive, assertive communication
- How to recognise early warning signs in situations and others’ behaviour
- Creative strategies to descalate and disrupt attacks using your mind and voice
- Physical techniques to disable a larger, stronger attacker
- Verbal skills for safety
- How to seek good support if needed and how to support others.
REQUIREMENTS
All women including trans and non-binary folks who are comfortable in a women-centered space. No experience needed, all fitness levels and abilities welcome.
Bring a water bottle, wear comfortable clothes and shoes for sitting and moving (i.e. active wear, running shoes, warm layers). Bring your Lunch.
A LITTLE ON THE FACILITATOR
Bell Murphy is an accredited member of Kia Haumaru - Personal Safety Education and has been teaching self defence for 12 years. She is also a PhD candidate in Gender Studies at Otago and mother to a feisty 5 year old girl.
Our Empowerment sessions are free thanks to Bell and Kia Haumaru who is funding these sessions, but we must meet minumum numbers to go ahead so please make sure you sign up (and Show up) well in advance!
